What happens in your body after drinking the traditional cocoa drink?

Our consciousness is constantly changing, often in ways we are not fully aware of. While some mood swings are obvious, such as intense joy or sadness, many other shifts are more subtle. Sometimes these changes arise from internal responses to events, such as the hormones released during anger or excitement, but often external factors such as food, drink and medications play a role in how we feel and think.
The science that studies these processes is called psychoneuroendocrinology (PNEI). It looks at how molecular processes in our bodies—from nerve pathways to hormonal cascades—affect our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. These changes occur not only in the brain, but throughout the body, as a complex network that forms our consciousness.
Many people, such as Buddhist monks, shamans or yogis, who consciously explore trance states, may have a keener awareness of these internal adjustments. But for most of us, these changes go unnoticed unless they noticeably affect our daily functioning, such as fatigue or falling in love. What is often overlooked is the influence of food on our mood and perception – and cacao is a particularly good example of this.
Because what actually happens in your body after drinking good quality cacao? I would tell you, a lot! The more I (Anne) research cacao, the more I learn what else happens in the body than I describe below.
Cacao has a profound impact on both body and mind.
1. Theobromine and caffeine enter the bloodstream
Theobromine, the main stimulant component of cacao, dilates blood vessels and increases blood circulation. This results in a gentle energy boost, without the jitteriness often associated with caffeine. The effect is more subtle, but still noticeable, and helps to create an energized and refreshed feeling.
2. Serotonin and tryptophan are stimulated
Cocoa contains amino acids such as tryptophan, which promote the production of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin, often referred to as the “happiness hormone,” contributes to feelings of well-being, relaxation, and even a mild sense of euphoria. This makes you feel better, both physically and mentally.
3. Phenylethylamine (PEA) boosts pleasure and focus
Phenylethylamine, also known as the “love chemical,” increases the release of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. These chemicals contribute to increased concentration, mental clarity, and even feelings of pleasure and euphoria—an effect often associated with falling in love.
4. Magnesium relaxes muscles and reduces stress
Cacao is rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps relax muscles and reduce stress. Magnesium plays a crucial role in calming the nerves, making you feel more relaxed mentally and physically after consuming cacao.
5. Polyphenols improve brain function
Cocoa is loaded with antioxidants, including flavonoids, which improve blood flow to the brain. This not only promotes cognitive function, but also increases feelings of alertness and clarity. The antioxidants in cocoa help protect the brain from damage and support better brain function in the long term.
6. Endorphins provide a natural high
The combination of all of the above effects stimulates the release of endorphins, the so-called “happiness hormones.” These natural painkillers provide a feeling of joy, energy and well-being. This explains why many people feel so happy and energized after eating chocolate or cocoa.
7. Body and mind achieve balance
Ultimately, cacao brings body and mind into harmony. It offers a perfect balance: energy without overstimulation, relaxation without fatigue. This makes cacao a versatile food choice that both stimulates the body and calms the mind.
Know that every body is different and everyone experiences cacao differently. Where one person already feels an effect at 15 grams, the other only at 25 grams. Always listen to your own body how much you want to drink and what you need!
